Tick-Borne Illness

‍Tick-borne illnesses like Lyme disease, Babesiosis, and Anaplasmosis can lead to chronic health issues if not diagnosed and treated effectively. At Caring for the Body, we use advanced testing, holistic protocols, and immune support to combat infections, address co-infections, and restore long-term wellness.

Tick-Borne Illness

Tick-Borne Illness

Tick-borne illnesses are infections transmitted by ticks, tiny arachnids that feed on the blood of animals and humans. While ticks may seem inconspicuous, they can carry bacteria, parasites, and viruses capable of causing serious health complications. The most well-known tick-borne illness is Lyme disease, but there are many others, including Babesiosis, Anaplasmosis, Ehrlichiosis, and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.Tick-borne infections can be acute or chronic, and symptoms can range from mild to debilitating. Early detection and comprehensive treatment are essential for preventing complications and promoting long-term recovery.

At Caring for the Body, we take a holistic and integrative approach to diagnosing and addressing tick-borne illnesses, focusing on root causes, immune support, and individualized care.Common Types of Tick-Borne Illnesses1. Lyme DiseaseWhat is Lyme Disease?
Lyme disease is caused by the Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria (and sometimes related species) transmitted through black-legged ticks (Ixodes scapularis) or deer ticks. If untreated or not fully eradicated, the infection can become chronic, leading to ongoing inflammation and multi-systemic symptoms.

Early Symptoms of Lyme Disease:

  • Bull’s-eye rash (erythema migrans) in some cases (but not always)
  • Flu-like symptoms: fever, chills, headache, fatigue
  • Muscle and joint aches

Chronic Lyme Disease Symptoms:

  • Persistent fatigue and brain fog
  • Migratory joint and muscle pain
  • Neurological issues (numbness, tingling, or nerve pain)
  • Cardiac complications (heart palpitations, irregular heartbeat)
  • Mood changes and anxiety

2. Babesiosis

What is Babesiosis?
Babesiosis is a parasitic infection caused by Babesia microti and other Babesia species, often transmitted by the same ticks that carry Lyme disease. Sometimes referred to as a “malaria-like” infection, Babesia parasites infect and destroy red blood cells, leading to hemolytic anemia and systemic inflammation.

Symptoms of Babesiosis:

  • High fever, chills, and sweating
  • Severe fatigue and weakness
  • Headaches and body aches
  • Dark urine due to red blood cell breakdown
  • Nausea, loss of appetite

Babesiosis can be asymptomatic in some individuals but can also cause severe complications in those with weakened immune systems, such as the elderly or people with underlying medical conditions.

3. Anaplasmosis and Ehrlichiosis

What are Anaplasmosis and Ehrlichiosis?

  • Anaplasmosis is caused by the bacterium Anaplasma phagocytophilum.
  • Ehrlichiosis is typically caused by Ehrlichia chaffeensis or Ehrlichia ewingii.

Both are intracellular bacteria that infect white blood cells, leading to flu-like symptoms and, if untreated, can cause significant inflammation and organ stress.

Symptoms of Anaplasmosis and Ehrlichiosis:

  • Fever, chills, and headache
  • Muscle aches and fatigue
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, abdominal pain)
  • Rash (more common in Ehrlichiosis)
  • Low white blood cell count and platelet count

Early treatment is critical, as severe cases can lead to respiratory failure, kidney problems, or neurological complications.

4. Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF)

What is RMSF?
Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, caused by Rickettsia rickettsii, is transmitted by American dog ticks, Rocky Mountain wood ticks, and brown dog ticks. Although it is more commonly associated with the southeastern and south-central regions of the United States, cases can occur in various geographic areas.

Symptoms of RMSF:

  • Sudden onset of fever (often high)
  • Severe headache and muscle pain
  • Distinctive rash that usually starts on the wrists and ankles, then spreads to palms, soles, and the rest of the body
  • Abdominal pain and gastrointestinal issues

RMSF can be life-threatening if not diagnosed and treated promptly, as it can damage blood vessels and lead to organ failure.

Co-Infections and Chronic Illness

Ticks often carry multiple pathogens, leading to co-infections in one individual. For instance, a person may contract Lyme disease and Babesiosis simultaneously, complicating the clinical picture and making diagnosis and treatment more challenging. Co-infections can intensify symptoms, increase inflammation, and prolong recovery time.

In many cases, chronic tick-borne illness occurs when the immune system becomes overburdened by multiple pathogens, and individuals may experience waxing and waning symptoms over months or years if not addressed comprehensively.

Diagnosis of Tick-Borne Illnesses

Accurate diagnosis is often challenging because symptoms can overlap and mimic other conditions. Additionally, standard testing (like ELISA or Western blot for Lyme) can miss cases of chronic or evolving infections.

At Caring for the Body, we use advanced diagnostic methods to identify tick-borne pathogens:
Specialty labs that perform comprehensive tick-borne pathogen panels (testing for Lyme, Babesia, Anaplasma, Ehrlichia, and more)
PCR and DNA-based tests for increased sensitivity and specificity
Functional assessments of immune function, inflammation markers, and nutrient levels

Early and accurate diagnosis is key to tailoring treatment and preventing long-term complications.

Holistic Treatment Approaches

Traditional treatment for tick-borne illnesses often involves antibiotics (doxycycline or combination therapies). However, chronic or complex cases require a multifaceted, integrative approach to fully eradicate pathogens and support the body’s healing process.

At Caring for the Body, our tick-borne illness programs may include:

1. Targeted Antimicrobial Therapies

  • Evidence-based antibiotics and/or antiparasitic medications when appropriate
  • Herbal antimicrobials (such as cat’s claw, artemisinin, and andrographis) to reduce pathogen load

2. Immune System Support

  • Immunomodulators like medicinal mushrooms, astragalus, and echinacea
  • Nutrient repletion (vitamin D, zinc, vitamin C) to boost immune resilience
  • Reducing chronic inflammation with omega-3 fatty acids and anti-inflammatory botanicals

3. Detoxification and Gut Health

  • Liver and lymph support (milk thistle, dandelion, NAC) to process and eliminate toxins
  • Probiotics and prebiotics to restore gut flora balance affected by antibiotics
  • Sauna therapy and dry brushing to encourage sweat and lymphatic circulation

4. Addressing Co-Infections and Biofilms

  • Enzymes (lumbrokinase, nattokinase) to break down biofilms
  • Combination protocols targeting multiple pathogens simultaneously

5. Lifestyle Modifications

  • Stress reduction through meditation, yoga, or breathing exercises (excess cortisol can suppress immune function)
  • Nutrient-dense diet focusing on whole, anti-inflammatory foods
  • Gentle exercise to improve circulation and oxygenation but avoid overexertion

6. Long-Term Support and Monitoring

  • Follow-up testing to assess treatment efficacy
  • Ongoing immune support to prevent relapses
  • Addressing underlying imbalances such as adrenal fatigue, hormonal dysregulation, and nutritional deficiencies

Preventing Tick-Borne IllnessPrevention is crucial, especially in areas where ticks are prevalent. Simple measures include:

  • Wearing protective clothing (long pants, socks, and light-colored clothing to spot ticks)
  • Using natural or approved insect repellents containing DEET or essential oils (like lemon eucalyptus)
  • Performing thorough tick checks on skin and clothing after spending time outdoors
  • Showering and washing clothing after hiking or gardening
  • Protecting pets with vet-approved tick-prevention methods
